Hello loyal readers. It’s me again, Bailey.

I was quite bummed coming into work today to learn that we have a three day weekend. You all remember me telling you how much I love my job, right? So, today mom had to sit me down and explain what Memorial Day is, and why we have it off.

Coming in today, I had every intention of telling you all about a healthy rabbit diet, but I have decided that there is a more important topic to discuss.

Memorial Day.

I learned what memorial day is truly about today. I wonder how many others are left clueless about the true meaning of the three day weekend. Some of you are probably thinking, “I didn’t come on here to read about Memorial Day. I came on here to read about rabbits.” But please don’t leave just yet. I promise I will give you some bunny knowledge.

So, the sunshine brought a lot of new faces into the store today and big boss man told me that it was time to go do my greeting duties. I decided I would kill two birds with one stone.

Wait! Hold on. Can I take a second to say how incredibly morbid that saying is… I’m glad I’m not a bird!

Okay, anyways. Moving on. I figured I would brainstorm a new topic for this weeks blog, that relates to Memorial Day. I started asking all of my new friends, “What is Memorial Day?” I was shocked how many of them really didn’t have a clue.

I decided that instead of telling you what I eat in a day (which is actually pretty boring – but I’ll share it someday), it was more important to tell you about the reason for the upcoming three day weekend.

So, what is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May each year. This year it falls on May 31st. Memorial Day commemorates the military men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our great country. We may not know all of their names, but to someone they were a mom, a dad, a sister, a brother, a daughter, a son, a friend… They knew the risks, but they also knew that without people like them, we would not live in the free country that we do today. It is because of these brave heroes that we are awarded many of the freedoms that we simply consider normal.

Heck, I’m lucky that I’m aloud to work. In some countries, I would only constitute as food… eek. I’m so lucky to be an American.

So, while you are preparing for your camping trips and barbeques, remember this: We celebrate Memorial Day for a reason. They may not have been your father, but there is a little boy out there that will have to grow up without their dad; a mother out there that had to bury her daughter far too early; friends, brothers and sister, that watched their own die on the battlefield.

I hope you see that Memorial Day is not just about a three day weekend, it’s about much more.

Now, I promised you all a little bunny knowledge to go with my spiel on Memorial Day, so here it is.

Memorial Day often brings the pyromaniacs out. You will hear loud fireworks from all around. If they are loud and obnoxious to you, how do you think we feel? So here are a few helpful tips for how to keep us calm this memorial day weekend.

  • If your bunny’s hutch is kept outside, please move it indoors. If this is not possible, then please partly cover their hutch with blankets to help drowned out some of the sound.
  • Soundproof your house as best as you can. Shut windows and doors. Close curtains. Provide some background noise by turning on the radio or tv.
  • Ensure that their safe place is ready to go. Provide plenty of bedding in their hutch. Make sure they have plenty of water and food available. (I eat alot when I get scared…)
  • Most importantly, make sure your rabbit is not alone. We are social animals and we will feel safer and more secure if we have someone familiar around.

Well, loyal readers, there you have it. Thank you for coming back to my “HAY, IT’S FRIDAY!” blog. I will see you all again next Friday and please don’t forget the true meaning of Memorial Day.

One last thing before I go. I’m sure after reading all about the true meaning of Memorial Day, you all want to know how you can help the families of our fallen heroes. Folds of Honor is an incredible non-profit organization that provides educational scholarships to the children and spouses of our fallen and disabled service members. They have awarded 29,000 scholarships since 2007, and 90% of every dollar donated goes directly to scholarships. I will leave the link below if you are interested in learning more about Folds of Honor.
